Introduction To ECA

Origins of the Earth Community Alliance

ECA founders were planting trees to restore a wetland environment when, David Corten's address to the University of Colorado (Boulder), "The Great Turning," was replayed on Portland Oregon's Community Radio Station, KBOO, Jan. 2007. The Great Turning describes the change in human culture and in our relationship with the world we are presently experiencing. It is the end of the age of empire, the end of blood for oil, the end of the patriarchal/dominator paradigm. It is the beginning of a new way, a celebration of life, a renewal of the planet and a rise of matriarchal power. Corten's message resonated with us deeply. We recognized the Earth Charter and Universal Principles (below) as values of our own, and although we had never heard of an Earth Community before, we knew that we were already part of a growing and dynamic alliance of like-minded people, who represent the overwhelming majority and strive in a heartfelt way, to live by the very same principles set forth by the Earth Charter. We immediately recognized a calling.

Reintegrating Earth Consciousness

ECA promotes reintroducing human beings to their natural environment and connecting earth conscious communities to eliminate fragmentation.

Deeply moved by Corten's address, we resolved to consciously forge ahead with the formation of a group dedicated to the principles set forth by the Earth Charter, building Earth Communities by developing public awareness and promoting participation in them. We named this organization, the Earth Community Alliance, or affectionately, ECA, in honor of the feminine aspect of nature.

ECA has blossomed into an incredible group of gifted people, possessing a surprising range of skills and abilities.  All share in common conviction and passion for environmental and social affairs and service.

ECA takes an active role in nurturing participant's inherent skills and abilities, withholding discrimination and judgment, so that individuals may grow and fluoresce as their natural selves in a comfortable, safe and supportive community environment.

It is the expressed intent of the ECA to assist humanity during this time of the Great Turning and cultivate public participation in environmentally conscious Earth Communities. ECA's primary work is in creating and assisting in the production of environmentally based initiatives and cultural events that celebrate life and benefit nature. Environmental initiatives are coupled with ceremonial gatherings intended to help people develop a sense of connection to themselves and channel energy toward specific purposes. By coming together to share our dreams in this way, we work towards the benefit of all.

Traditional Teachings

The Earth Charter

From Earth Charter International Organization

An Earth Community is committed to practicing the principles of The Earth Charter. The Earth Charter "...is a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society for the 21st century. Created by the largest global consultation process ever associated with an international declaration, endorsed by thousands of organizations representing millions of people, the Earth Charter seeks to inspire a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the human family and the living world. The Charter is an expression of hope and a call to global partnership at this critical time in history" (www.earthcharter.org. Dec. 19. 2007).

Universal Principles

The Earth Charter includes a declaration of universal principles crafted through council and consultation involving people from around the globe, and expresses the core principles of the Earth Community. These are:
1. Respect and care for the Community of Life
2. Ecological Integrity
3. Social and Economic Justice
4. Democracy, Non-violence and Peace.

These are the primary guidelines of the Earth Community
